Decision making process

I learned a lot of new from the class activity on decision making that we just completed on Monday 3/15/10 and especially, from discussion of this event in the next class. I participated in such events in the past, bat I never think about decision making process as a system. From lecture and our discussion I learned that we have many tools which can make the decision making process to be more effective.
For example, we can use different methods to handle conflicts. In class decision making exercise I personally used a compromise method. Actually, I didn‘t choose this method, I even didn’t know that it is a method. I just behave as I thought is right in this situation. I think we were lucky, someone stepped up and took the leader responsibilities, and contributed significantly reduce the chaos in class and came to agreement.
We could use collaborating method in our decision making event. I think this method would be more efficient and would minimize our conflicts and would save our time. Definitely, it is easier come to consensus in a small groups. So I think we all learned from our lesson and now we are more experienced in decision making process.

Team performance

Two weeks ago in our Management class we were divided on several groups by six persons in each group. Each team had to construct a effective egg protector in a way, that when we drop egg from high approximately seven feet, the egg stays undamaged.
My team also as the others Had objectives. For 25 minutes we had to discuss and draw the effective egg protector which we had to built from particular materials after our discussion, then for ten minutes we had to construct adopted by our team protector.
After we tested our construction, our egg was destroyed it is mean we failed our project. In my opinion it happened because we didn’t have a clear leader, enough experience to solve this problem and we didn’t have enough time to discuss and construct egg protector. In addition, I think it would be more help to us if we would feel materials before discussion or at least while we discuss.
While we did our project we went through some steps of Planning Process. We defined our goal and objectives, determined our resources and current status vis-à-vis objectives, implemented the plan and evaluated result.
We didn’t develop several alternative strategies because we had only two scenarios or our egg stay undamaged or it going be destroyed. We didn’t make a tactical plan, probably because we didn’t have a clear leader.
In my opinion my team made a good performance. Even in spite of our plan was fail, we get a valuable experience of working as a team. Of course in next time we will be more affective as a team by allocating roles throughout the team.

Cultural Differences

When we are studying other cultures or interacting with people of another culture, we understand that all cultures have not only some similarities, but also some differences. I came in America from Russia and I believe that in USA we can meet people from almost every country in the world, that is a big opportunity in learning about other cultures. I would like to speak about some cultural differences.
For example, in Russia when you speak with someone and you nod, it is mean that you are agree with your interlocutor and in opposite when you are disagree with your interlocutor you shake your head. In United States I meet some Bulgarian friend and I was surprised, when he told me that in Bulgaria when you nod, it is mean that you are disagree with your interlocutor, and when you shake your head, it is mean that you are agree with your interlocutor.
In Russia the highest score in school is five and the lowest score is one. In Germany the highest score in school is one and the lowest score is five.
I also found some cultural differences between Russia in United States. In Russia married people wear wedding ring on the left hand and in United States married people wear wedding ring on the right hand. In United States of America on holidays people give to each other even quantity of flowers, but in Russia people give even quantity of flowers only to dead people.
